Pre-ESL Literacy for Spanish Speakers
for PC & Mac
requires Internet connection
¡LEAMOS! PC teaches Spanish-speaking youth and adults to read
and write. Literacy in Spanish opens the door to learning English, accessing
essential health information and services, and gaining better understanding
and control of personal finances. Literacy also leads to promotions at work
or to new jobs. It inspires and enables parents to become more involved in their
children’s education. Shedding the stigma of illiteracy creates personal
confidence and access to a larger world.
GETTING STARTED with ¡LEAMOS! PC takes about 30 minutes on the
part of a tutor. The tutor can be a family member, friend, volunteer or staff
person. The tutor registers the new student and teaches the student how to use
the mouse. A brief Tutor’s Guide provides guidance and helpful advice
about this process. Note: Except for entering the log-in name and password,
the student will not need to use the keyboard, only the mouse.
¡LEAMOS! PC is comprised of 43 lessons. Each lesson is divided
into six sections.

MAKING PROGRESS: Sections 2, 4, 5 and 6 of each lesson include short
quizzes designed to make sure the student learns the content before proceeding
to the next section. When the student passes the quiz, ¡LEAMOS! PC congratulates
and advances the student; if the student does not pass, the program tactfully
encourages studying the section again and automatically returns to the beginning
of that section.
The built-in student tracking system maintains data and enables checking on
students’ progress, results on lesson quizzes, and time spent using the
program. It usually takes students 50-100 hours to complete the program and
become functionally literate.
